Plot
A very poor and a wealthy family coexist in the latter's luxurious house in a most unexpected way, when the eldest son of the former meets the wealthy Parks and invades their lives. A story/movie with a fascinating mix of slapstick comedy, thriller, and social allegory.
Parasite, a hybrid of thriller and corrosive black comedy about social inequalities, was a great success and a sweeping international success, only to achieve something that had never been done before. It is the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Only the third film in history to win both the Palme d'Or and the Best Picture Oscar. Parasites, which swept this year's film festival awards as well as Critics' and Actors' Guild awards, is a film that refuses to be categorized in any genre or even compared to any other.
Review by Nektarios Sakka (Cinema) ****4 1/2 stars
"The decisive victory for "Parasites" comes through achieving an almost perfect balance between pure entertainment cinema and a work of art that opens a dialogue with both its time and the medium itself. It has an impeccable grasp of pacing and a compelling plot, maneuvers exemplarily between cinematic genres, plays the game of scripted twists perfectly to the extent that they stimulate rather than instrumentalize the dramatization, and builds an exemplarily staged microcosm full of well-written characters who do not succumb to Manichean or populist logics. All of this adds up to a film that first and foremost wants to be stimulating as an experience for its viewer. For 'Parasites' is destined to win him in the theatre and not to leave his mind for long."
Review by Thodoris Koutsogiannopoulos (Lifo-Alpha) *** 5 stars
"Parasites, which the Cohen brothers would surely envy and Tarantino would applaud tearfully, is not only a film about distinction, wealth, caste or education, but a heady crossover of cinematic genres, from black comedy revenge to anguished adventure, universal, sharp and entertainingly fresh, about the importance of second, or even third, chances. From a master craftsman, one of the great films of recent years."
