My friend Dostoevsky
By Dimitra Papadopoulou
With Pavlos Loutsidis, directed by Kostas Gakis
What could a "New Greek" have in common with the leading
novelist F. Dostoevsky? The theatrical adaptation of Demeter
Papadopoulou attempts to explain this peculiar correlation...
The hero of the show is the man next door. Η
his well-paid job, nice house and expensive car are the products of his
of well-being and the conditions for recognition as a "successful" member
of our society... Immigrants and bad neighborhoods are hurting the aesthetics
of his while essential accessory-confirmation of his masculine identity.. the Eve, a
ethereal existence... All this before the crisis...
A worse nightmare our hero could not have lived. Victim of the economic
crisis now lives in a basement in Ag. Panteleimon without a job and without the
accompanying his former "status", with all that implies. His only
company, his huge debts and a book that fell into his hands by accident. "The
a ridiculous dream". Reading it makes you realize how futile and dead-end it was
his life and how "ridiculous" can be considered whoever supports his happiness
to material goods and ephemeral pleasures. Still, the suffering that can be
one feels, when confronted with the "ridiculousness" that once defined as
"happiness". Such a person is called upon to either redefine his life, or
to resign from it. Even put an end to it once and for all...
One question plagues him as we watch him on stage and sympathize with
his drama. "To live or not to live?". The answer he finally finds for himself
with the help of his precious friend Dostoevsky. In the end, the immigrants did not
seem so repulsive, the squares acquire colour and life becomes meaningful, since
selfless love acts as an antidote for all losses.
A play about life, taken from life itself. Perhaps after the end of
performance your neighbor seems less annoying, the noise of the neighborhood
more bearable, the problems more easily dealt with, the obstacles not
and so insurmountable. Even for a little while...
