Emilios Hilakis is back again
ALONE WITH AMLETT
Dimitris Kamarotos plays music with him on stage.
Hamlet returns more alone, more modern, more urgent than ever.
Emilios Hilakis returns to the stage to perform the main roles of the Shakespearean drama in an evocative performance that shocked the audience and the critics.
Alone with Hamlet, based on William Shakespeare's Hamlet, is a bold adaptation of the iconic play, based on the translation by George Chaimona, and returns eight years after its last production. Directed by Manolis Dounias and directed by Emilios Hilakis himself, it unfolds the passions, inner conflicts and tragic irony that run through Hamlet's story.
What happens in the project: When the King of Denmark dies suddenly, the throne is usurped by his brother Claudius - seizing not only power, but also the dead king's wife Gertrude. Hamlet's queen and mother indulges in a hasty, almost unholy marriage, leaving her son mired in grief and confusion. The fragile balance is shattered when the King's Ghost appears: he is not dead, of course, he reveals - he has been murdered. Killed by his own brother, insidiously and with the throne as his goal. Hamlet vows revenge-not even his love for the tender Ophelia will distract him from his purpose. To assure himself of Claudius' guilt, he invites a troupe of itinerant actors to put on a play re-enacting his father's murder. Claudius' reaction to what is happening will betray him, and Hamlet's revenge will be both terrible and self-destructive.
The performance "Alone with Hamlet" follows the young prince's attempt to travel the distance from Thought to Action. Realizing that the value system he believed in and the contrived bliss he enjoyed are dead, Hamlet struggles to maintain his dignity and ideals in a society that is ideologically collapsing.
Paradoxical - or even prophetic - how much this society resembles ours, four centuries later. The question is no longer "to live or not to live", but "how to live": is it better to live doing nothing or to die doing?
This question runs through the performance and becomes its backbone.
Emilio Hilakis becomes Hamlet, Ophelia, Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, Laertes, Horace, the King's Ghost - keeping the viewer on his toes. Next to him, Dimitris Kamarotos creates a sound world on stage that functions as an inner voice, an echo of the tragic hero. With sets and costumes by Alexia Theodorakis, movement by Phaedra Dayoglou and lighting by Nikos Vlasopoulos, Alone with Hamlet returns to the absolute basics of theatrical action - voice, body, music and light.
