GIRLS & BOYS by Dennis Kelly

with Natasha Exxidavelloni

directed by Leto Triantafyllidou

After the performance "The Villa (The Road Not Taken)", director Leto Triantafyllidou and actress Natasha Exxidavelloni meet again in Dennis Kelly's theatrical monologue "Girls & Boys", a shocking play about the origins of violence in modern society.

"I met my husband in the queue to board an easyJet flight, and I have to admit I disliked him from the first moment."

A chance meeting at an airport leads to love at first sight. A marriage, a house, two children, parallel careers - an ordinary family life. But as time passes, the balance is upset and things take an unexpectedly dark turn.

"I don't remember exactly when things between us started going wrong - I just remember suddenly being in it."

Dennis Kelly sketches with immediacy, insight and narrative skill the fine lines between happiness and loss, accurately capturing the female psyche and gradually revealing the nuances of the violence that underlies the couple's everyday life.

In the performance directed by Leto Triantafyllidou, the protagonist narrates her life with a reflective mood, balancing with sensitivity between humour, emotion and anguish. In her attempt to reconstruct her story, she uses audiovisual means to record and revisit her memories. By building the puzzle of her life from scratch through video, sound and images, she becomes at once narrator, director and viewer of her story. So are we dealing with a live performance or the creation of a documentary on stage? Or is it an audiovisual self-portrait?

As the heroine searches for the causes and consequences of what she has done and lived, violence seems to permeate every moment of her seemingly happy life. This highlights fundamental issues such as deep-rooted violence in human relationships, gender inequality and the phenomenon of domestic homicide. Is violence ultimately an inevitable element of human nature or a product of the social and cultural conditions in which we grow up? When, finally, the actress on stage turns her gaze from the camera to the audience, she asks a crucial question: Can we ever escape the violence that lies within us?

For the performance "Girls and Boys", translated and directed by Leto Triantafyllidou, an excellent group of collaborators is collaborating: The sets are signed by Dimitris Polychroniadis. Alexandra Katerinopoulou composes the soundscapes and the original music. The videos and photographs of the performance were captured through the lens of Despina Spyrou. The choreographer Konstantinos Papanikolaou is in charge of the movement and Antonis Dirhalidis designs the lighting.

The performance is suitable for persons over 16 years of age.
