THEATRE OF IONY - K. Theotoki LOVE LAWFULNESS at POLYTECHNO (39 Scholemburgou Street), from 31/10 to 4/11

The Ionian Theatre, for 5 unique performances in Corfu, with the play "Illegal Love" by Konstantinos Theotokis, adapted and directed by Petros Avgerinos and with Dora Papanikolaou in the role of Diamantos.

In this play, Stathis Therianos, a fairly well-off middle-aged small farmer from the village of Dafnila in Corfu, decides to marry his son to Chrysavgi, the prettiest girl in the village. This marriage will be the occasion to depict a dark landscape of unspoken passions. Stathis' fierce desire for Chrysavgi and the stubborn reaction of his wife Diamantha, who has understood the "illicit desires" of her husband, will ultimately trigger the developments. The illicit relationship between bride and father-in-law, which Diamanto will try to keep hidden, because it threatens to shatter not only the two families but also the moral principles of the closed village society, will end in tragedy...

Konstantinos Theotokis's "Agapi Paragonoi" (1905), with a theme taken from the harsh living conditions of a decentralized and stagnant society and with heroes who move marked by the two-way pressure of impulses and the environment, is a landmark work for the literature of our country, while at the same time enriching in a pioneering way for its time the shift towards the psychological study of localness. The performance, which was praised by the audience and critics, focuses in a contemporary and pivotal way on the atmosphere of the era and the depth of Theotokis' heroes, while highlighting the tragic nature of situations and persons.
