Sounds and poetry at the Old Fortress of Corfu, 29/06/2024

When we hear the phrase "poetry set to music", Mikis Theodorakis immediately comes to mind. Mikis Theodorakis put music into poetry and poetry into music. He even dared to add "popular" instruments to his setting.
A pioneering, intelligent and daring project, which changed the perception that the Greek people had until then had of poetry. With his music, Mikis put poetry in every house, in every neighbourhood, in every café. Seferis, Ritsos, Elytis entered the consciousness of the people. They entered the consciousness of Greeks of all social strata and educational levels.
Mikis Theodorakis managed to become part of the personality of this people for one more reason. He believed that when an artist completes a work and presents it to the public, it no longer belongs to him. All his cultural work - as he himself has said - belongs to the people. After all, he was composing in order to converse with the people.
This love for the world has been expressed in many ways, with a particular fondness for young people. One of the many examples that confirm this is the trust he has shown in the Mikis Theodorakis Symphony Orchestra, urging all the young musicians involved to freely disseminate his work and develop through it. The Mikis Theodorakis Symphony Orchestra thus carries history, while at the same time having the whole future ahead of it.
The concert "Temples in the shape of the sky" with Natassa Bofiliou, is a tribute to poetry set to music with works by Mikis Theodorakis and other great Greek composers, such as Stavros Xarchakos and Yannis Markopoulos, and the new composer Zorzes Katris. Elias Gogkidis is in charge of the orchestra conducting and programme curation.
On Saturday 29 June the Old Fortress will be filled with sounds and poetry. It will be filled with culture expressed through the talent of young artists.
