The play \"Ariadne, Living with Schizophrenia\" by Areti Hartofilika, after a successful cycle of performances at Theatre 104 in Athens, comes on Friday 4 April 2025 at the New Stage of the Municipal Theatre, directed by Augustinos Remoundos.<\/p>\n
Does mental illness concern us?
\nIs it possible from one moment to the next to find yourself on the opposite side of absurdity? How thin is the line that separates the rational from the irrational? And when mental illness knocks at our door, what do we do?
\nIs there light in the darkness and how can you find it?<\/p>\n
The performance focuses on the everyday life of Ariadne, a woman who has been diagnosed with Schizophrenia since the age of 23 and is hosted in a Psychosocial Rehabilitation Home. Seeing shadows following her everywhere, the heroine fights her personal battle with the disease, trying to understand her place in society and to distinguish reality from fantasy. Through Ariadne's eyes, the viewer enters a world full of shadows, sees the invisible side of mental illness and at the same time experiences a story full of patience and hope.<\/p>\n
Close to her, her helper and support, is Fotini, her psychologist, who helps Ariadne to manage her crises and find small moments of improvement and strong personal growth, despite the illness. Together,they create a beautiful relationship of trust and companionship, which proves that even in dark times, hope can blossom.<\/p>\n
Through the small victories of a woman living with Schizophrenia, the play takes us into the depths of the human soul, which can recover even in the most difficult circumstances. The show delves into the issues of mental health, reminding us that no mental illness is taboo.<\/p>\n
The text is signed by the author, psychologist and psychotherapist Areti Hartofilika, a graduate of the University of Essex (Hons) and a student of Clinical Psychology. She was inspired by her experience during her volunteer work at the \"Ariadne\" Psychosocial Rehabilitation Hostel of the Regional Development and Mental Health Society H.P.A.Ps.Y. An experience that, in her words, left a deep imprint on her that made her feel it was her duty to share with the world. This was preceded by her book \"Real Women\", which deals through testimonies again with a taboo issue, the issue of gender violence faced by women in society and
\nin their interpersonal relationships.<\/p>\n

\nIt's not easy to talk about issues like depression or schizophrenia. Unfortunately, even today it is still a stigma. Schizophrenia disrupts thinking, emotions, behaviour and directly affects patients and their loved ones. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder, which can lead to significant changes in a person's perception of reality. The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch said that: \"Fear of my life is as necessary to me as my illness is to me. Without my anxiety and my illnesses, I am a ship without a rudder. My suffering is part of me and my art.\" My mission as a director is a difficult one. I have to succeed, to bring to the stage the world hidden in Ariadne of the Virtuous Guardian and to win the viewer, \"without falling\" into ready-made recipes we have seen in the cinema.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
