THE SEA AND THE OLD MAN
\nBased on Ernest Hemingway's play \"The Old Man and the Sea\"

2ND YEAR OF PERFORMANCES<\/p>\n
After the great and extremely successful summer tour around Greece and the 2nd winter cycle of sold out performances in Thessaloniki and other major cities, the performance \"The Sea and the Old Man\", which received rave reviews, returns for its second year of touring in selected theatres.<\/p>\n
The theatrical productions Dimitris Fotopoulos IKE present:<\/p>\n
\"The Sea and the Old Man\" is an adaptation based on the classic and
\nErnest's Pulitzer Prize-winning play \"The Old Man and the Sea\"
\nHemingway, after which he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The
\nthis work ranks among the masterpieces of world literature
\nand is likened to an Homeric epic.<\/p>\n
It describes the story of a fisherman, Santiago - played by
\nTasos Nousias- and his journey to the unexplored and vast
\nsea. His epic encounter with a magnificent blue marlin, which
\nthe hero managed to fish after 84 days without a catch. The fish
\nis very strong, Santiago doesn't manage to kill it and it
\nhooked by his line, pulling him and his little boat
\ndeeper and deeper into the sea for three days and three nights. \u039f
\nSantiago finally manages to kill the fish but because it is very
\nbig enough to fit in the boat, he ties it to the side of the boat. On her way
\nhis return sharks attack him and eat all his flesh
\nof a huge fish. Underneath this simple story, there is a world
\nrich in symbolism and metaphors in the search for meaning,
\nthe endurance of the human spirit and its conflictual relationship
\nman with the natural environment.<\/p>\n
Manolino, played by Vassilis Milionis, is the
\nSantiago's devoted young apprentice. As his father
\nno longer allows him to go fishing with Santiago, Manolino
\ncan only visit him in his daydreams and his nightmares
\ndreams in the sea and thus the connection between memory is made,
\npresent and future.<\/p>\n
Hemingway wrote the story in 1951 and Marlene Kaminksi wrote it
\ntransports it to our modern times. On the occasion of the title, added the
\nthe figure of the Sea performed by the dancer Phaedra Soutou
\nand with her voice Evelyn Assouad.<\/p>\n

DIRECTOR'S NOTE
\nReading history from the perspective of the industrialized and
\nmodern environment of the 21st century, I was reminded of the
\nthe primordial struggle and harmony between Man and Nature. If
\none has learned how to work with and within nature instead of
\ntries to conquer and destroy it, there is no limit to the
\ndepth of a real understanding of its mysteries. The fate of
\nof man cannot be separated from the fate of the oceans. However
\nthese, 70 years since history was written, direct or indirect
\nhuman impact has damaged the health of the oceans, something that with
\nin turn affects life on land. Combining text and dance
\nand 3D animation screenings, I hope to invite the audience to
\nimmersed in a holistic universe setting in which they might be able to
\nremember our inevitable and enigmatic connection with nature.
\nIn the words of Lmi Ponifasio (theatre director from
\nSamoa and choreographer) \"it is not possible to change the human
\nbehavior without revising our spirituality.\" No
\nwe can only hope that only by using technology,
\nspending money, establishing guidelines will
\navoid the climate emergency and man-made
\ndestruction of natural habitats and biodiversity.<\/p>\n
As artists it is our duty to find ways to improve
\nthe quality of the way people feel, hear,
\nsee and touch the world. What is our role on earth? We are
\npart of the earth's processes and these processes were happening very
\nbefore us and will happen long after we're gone.
