It is one of the most important texts of modern Greek literature.
\nIt is the first Greek short story with a psychographic character that manages to go beyond the narrow limits of the dramatic, penetrating into the psychological motivations of the protagonists. Viziinos is a pioneer, as it is the first time in Greek short story writing that the world of the soul is opened up. The world of consciousness and inner reflection.<\/p>\n

This short masterpiece with autobiographical elements was first published in 1883, translated into French in the Nouvelle Revue, and combines flowing and exciting narration with lively dialogue, mystery with suspense, but also the enigma that lingers from the mere hearing of the title of the work. What was the sin?<\/p>\n

A few words about the project:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It starts from the childhood of the narrator - Giorgis, marked by the illness of his sister Annio and the desperate but futile struggle of his mother to save her sickly girl from death. The guilt of loss subsequently prompts her to two successive adoptions of young girls, but these become the cause of neglecting her three other fatherless boys, and depriving them of maternal care. When they grow up and become men, they still cannot understand this misguided obsession of their mother. When, years later, he returns from his studies in Germany, George contradicts his mother in her decision to keep her second psycho daughter, which leads her to reveal her tragic secret to him.<\/p>\n

The route of the show:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was staged in the 2023-2024 season in a central theatre in Athens, having received excellent reviews from the very first performances, both from journalists and experts, as well as from ordinary spectators. It is addressed to all social groups, parents and teachers, but also to high school students. And ultimately to the consciousness of all. It continued its journey in the summer of the same year, outside of Athens, in selected cities and islands of Greece with the same and even greater response, cooperating with public and private institutions, with the Serres and Kozani theatres, with the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation (P.Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos of Lasithi, Patras, Preveza, Kozani, Ptolemaida, Serres, Chios, Rhodes, Thessaloniki are just a few of them. Last November she started her 2nd year of scheduled performances in Athens, which was completed in March. And the journey continues, now in its 3rd year. Representing the performance as its creator, Konstantinos Giannakopoulos participated, at the invitation of Aspasia Pavlopoulou, in the Grand Conference \"The New Greek Language and Literature in Primary and Secondary Education\", with excerpts from this work by Vizinos, which took place in the Jacqueliine de Romilly Hall of the Ministry of Education.<\/p>\n

It has been exactly ten years since my acquaintance with the unbelievably beautiful, fictional, dare I say novelistic world of the Thracian writer. For him, this world concealed trauma, bitterness and frustrations, but in the end it revealed to us, his distant observers, how this trauma can become a miracle. Under certain conditions, of course. My collaboration then with Demos Avdelios, as Vyzynos in My Mother's Sin, was instrumental in introducing me to this world.
\nI think it is common and necessary for everyone to return from time to time for some reason, known or unknown, to events and situations in their lives that have marked them positively or negatively, recalling this experience through memory and imagination. The ability to reconstruct the experience through imagination is essential, since the experience can never be the same. The reason, fundamentally, is time. And we who change with it. This change in the way we see things is a decisive factor for the event itself, which no longer belongs entirely to the past but mainly to the present of the narrative, which in the case of the theatre constitutes a stage act. This psychoanalytic practice has been the reason, or the occasion, for me to deal with this story again, this time in a double capacity. Besides, The Sin of My Mother is the first Greek short story with a psychographic character. No coincidence if we consider that the author studied philosophy and psychology in Germany. Nevertheless, a deep trauma never completely goes away. But you can learn to live with it. And that's the miracle. To remember without fear and forget without guilt.
