\u0397\u00a0\"Medea\" by Euripides\u00a0<\/strong>at\u00a0Corfu International Festival<\/strong>, in the Versiad of the Old Fortress on\u00a0Wednesday 21 September.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A new approach to one of the most heartbreaking works of world theatre under the direction of\u00a0Emilios Hilakis<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Manolis Dounia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Medea kills her children not just to avenge Jason, but mainly to save them from the hands of her enemies, to prevent the power from murdering them. This is why Euripides - despite her heinous act - in the end, instead of punishing her, praises her.<\/p>\n

In Medea, love subverts reason, transforms people, and besieges even the most sacred relationships, such as that between a mother and her children. Erotic betrayal turns into abysmal hatred and directs the fate of all. Medea - who for Jason's sake betrayed her family, stole the Golden Fleece and fled her homeland - finds herself isolated in Corinth among people who consider her a stranger, a barbarian. When Jason announces that she will marry Glaucus, the daughter of Creon, King of Corinth, the wounded and despised Medea is transformed into a dark and vengeful savage. \"A woman may not be able to bear to hear of battles and swords, but when her love is besieged, there is no more warlike soul,\" the poet writes, and has Medea destroy her young rival by sending her poisoned gifts that cause her gruesome death. The betrayed Medea does not stop there. She commits the unthinkable: she kills her children with her own hands.<\/p>\n

With a strong team of contributors,\u00a0Euripides' \"Medea\"<\/strong>, as adapted and imagined by the two directors, follows the model of ancient tragedy, where three hypocrites play all the characters in the drama. The iconic work of ancient Greek literature is presented in a new translation by\u00a0George Blanas<\/strong>\u00a0and his original live music\u00a0Dimitris Kamarotos.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
