When she started school, her family moved to Maroussi and then to Athens. She studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens, at the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory and at the Moscow Film Institute.
Her relationship with writing began in her high school years, writing plays for puppet theatre, short stories and novels, which were published in various literary magazines. Alongside writing, she was active in the struggle for freedom, social justice and democracy, participating in the left-wing movement since the years of the German occupation in Greece.
Her participation in this struggle defined her personal life. From 1952 to 1964 she and her husband, the playwright George Sevastikoglou, lived together as political refugees in the Soviet Union, first in Tashkent and then in Moscow, where their two children were born. They returned to Greece in '64, only to flee again in '67 to Paris, where they remained until the mid-1970s due to the dictatorship. Her clear style of writing, linguistic excellence, critical attitude towards people and situations, humour and insightful look at events are the characteristics of Alkis Zei's works that have made her beloved by Greek and foreign readers.
"Achilles' Fiancee", "The Caplani of Vitrina" and "Peter's Long Walk" are among the best-selling books of modern Greek literature.
Apart from Achilles' Fiancée, her books are mainly aimed at children and teenagers, but they are always read with great pleasure by adults as well. They are inspired by her personal experiences weaving their case alongside historical events. The themes they deal with are everyday and universal.
"If I chose to write about children, it is because I wanted to capture the important things my generation lived through, which I fear will be forgotten when we are gone," he has noted.
Alkis Zei is an ambassador of contemporary Greek literature abroad, as all of her work has been translated and published in many countries around the world.

Director's note
Alki Zei wrote stories whose magical element was the gaze of the same, that secret garden that few adults manage to know where it is with such honesty, love and courage. And Alki Zei seemed to know very well how to open this invisible door and to be inside the souls and thoughts of the children.
Perhaps because she herself lived with her personal truth as her only compass, her tenderness and the immense humour that followed her even in the most difficult events of her life. Elements that the brave and tireless soul of children has in abundance, in what we all once had. Our childhood. There is a world in her books that children recognize immediately and spontaneously because it is their world. The imagination in the stories Alki Zei tells us is not only a place to escape but also a way to make reality.
A world where people can coexist no matter how different they are. With the testimony always through its characters that nothing is taken for granted. That things aren't always easy, ideal and happy. But with a perspective, through this unique point of view, that you can always find within yourself that strength to believe in something better for your life and have the right to dream it. Without being didactic, without hiding the truth. And that's what I think can make her works have this timeless potential by creating an open dialogue to this day with children.
This vast magical world that we all knew when we were children that anything was possible there. This world of greatness. Our childhood. And our only home.
Dimitra Larentzaki

Note from the son of Alkis Zei, Petros Sevastikoglou
Alki and I never stopped travelling. 10 years ago we made a trip - a little different from everything we had done together. We went to Samos to make a documentary about her life. "The Great Walk of Alkis", which never stopped; she was returning to Vathi, Lamagari, where she spent her early childhood and where her imprint is as vivid as the Kaplani in the window that was the beginning of her writing her first novel.
The Caplani of the book was there in its display case at the Natural History Museum. Although many years had passed and the deterioration of the Canvas was evident, when he saw it, he leaned into the display case and said: "My Caplani, it all started with you."
Alki did not live nostalgically for the past, and the stories she told, even about years gone by, were to speak to young and old alike in the present. In our performance we tried, like Alki, to tell this story from the past with great love to children today, with all that Alki still left open to be told by her through Kaplani with the audience.
Peter Sevastikoglou

[{"id":121656,"type":"default","title":"Πλατεία - Κανονικό","description":"","capacityType":"own","price":12,"capacity":140,"available":0,"sharedCapacity":140,"sold":140,"shareSold":140,"isShared":false,"currencyDecimalPoint":",","currencyNumberOfDecimals":2,"currencyPosition":"prefix","currencySymbol":"$","currencyThousandsSep":"."},{"id":121657,"type":"default","title":"Κανονικό Πλατεία ΦΣ","description":"","capacityType":"own","price":12,"capacity":50,"available":50,"sharedCapacity":50,"sold":0,"shareSold":0,"isShared":false,"currencyDecimalPoint":",","currencyNumberOfDecimals":2,"currencyPosition":"prefix","currencySymbol":"$","currencyThousandsSep":"."}]
[22,21
post-121655","tribe_events","type-tribe_events","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tribe_events_cat-paidikes","tribe_events_cat-parastaseis","cat_paidikes","cat_parastaseis
woo
["GET
