"Love Illegonimos" by Konstantinos Theotokis at Radar Theatre
After the sold out performances in Corfu and Zakynthos, the Theatre of the Ionian Sea continues its triumphant march, bringing his masterpiece Konstantinos Theotokis on the Athenian scene. The performance "Love Illegal", in directed by Petros Avgerinos and with the captivating performance by Dora Papanikolaou, travels to Athens and premieres at Radar Theatre, bringing with it the aura of the Ionian Islands and a story that, although written a century ago, remains eerily relevant.
The performance takes us to Corfu in the early 20th century. In the heart of the story, Stathis Therianos, a wealthy landowner, is preparing for the wedding of his son to the beautiful Chrysavgi. Only he falls victim to a passionate and forbidden love for his bride.
Diamanto, his wife, understands what is happening and silently struggles to protect the family and the values of a small, unforgiving society.
Η Dora Papanikolaou, in the role of Diamantos, delivers a shocking interpretation. Every look, every movement, every silence is full of tension. She is one of those performances that make you forget you are in a theatre, you think you are really watching the life of a woman at the centre of a moral storm.
The sets are simple and authentic, taking you immediately back to that era. The music, traditional and melodic, gives rhythm to the narrative, creating the feeling that you are in the courtyard of an old house somewhere in Corfu.
A play that speaks of passions, honour, social outcry - but also of man's eternal struggle between what he wants and what he must.
A play that, as then, so today, reminds us that some feelings never get old.
